๐Ÿ’Š Pharmacy Friday ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿฉบ

Meet this gorgeous little calf! ๐Ÿ’š
He belongs to one ...of our veterinary nurses and our Veterinarian was out seeing his other little calf friend who had septic arthritis (joint ill). This little guy pictured was just out checking out what we were up to.

The other calf had septic arthritis. Which is a painful bacterial infection of the joint, most commonly seen in young calves. The bacteria often enter through the navel shortly after birth and travel through the bloodstream, causing infection and inflammation within the joints.

๐Ÿšจ Signs to watch for:
๐Ÿฎ Swollen, hot, or painful joints
๐Ÿฎ Lameness or reluctance to stand
๐Ÿฎ Reduced milk intake
๐Ÿฎ Fever or lethargy

๐Ÿ’ก Pharmacy Friday Tip: Early treatment is essential! Prompt veterinary care gives calves the best chance of recovery and can help prevent permanent joint damage.

Prevention starts at birth:
โœ”๏ธ Ensure calves receive plenty of good-quality colostrum.
โœ”๏ธ Dip navels soon after birth.
โœ”๏ธ Maintain clean, dry calving areas.
โœ”๏ธ Keep a close eye on newborn calves during their first few weeks of life.

A big thank you to one of our wonderful nurses for letting us feature her beautiful calf this week! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ’š

If you have a young calf that's showing signs of lameness or has a swollen joint, don't waitโ€”contact our team as early treatment can make all the difference.

โœจ Meet the Kelpie โ€“ Australiaโ€™s ...Intelligent Working Dog! โœจ๐Ÿพ
Bred for herding livestock in the harsh Australian outback, Kelpies are known for their incredible stamina, sharp intelligence, and hardworking nature. These energetic dogs love having a job to do and thrive in active homes where they can stay both physically and mentally busy. ๐Ÿพโšก

๐Ÿง  Fun Fact: Kelpies can run over 50 kilometres in a single day while working on farms! Their endurance and agility make them one of the most impressive working dog breeds in the world. ๐Ÿ‘

Loyal, eager to learn, and full of personality, Kelpies excel in agility, obedience, herding, and outdoor adventures. While theyโ€™re famous as hardworking farm dogs, many also love relaxing at home with their families after a busy day. โค๏ธ

Because theyโ€™re such smart dogs, Kelpies do best with plenty of exercise, training, and enrichment to keep their minds occupied. Without enough stimulation, they can become bored and mischievous!

โœจWe welcome Zea! โœจ

With over 15 years in the veterinary industry, Zea brings a wealth ...of knowledge, experience, and leadership to the Ovens & Kiewa Vets team ๐Ÿ’š

Although Zea is one of the newer members of our team, she has fit in effortlessly, and it already feels like sheโ€™s been part of the Ovens & Kiewa Vets family for years. Her friendly nature, positive attitude, and willingness to support those around her have made her a valued member of our team from day one.

As our Practice Manager, Zea plays an important role in keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. Working across both of our clinics โ€” Ovens & Kiewa Vets in Myrtleford and our sister clinic, Dr Paws in Wangaratta โ€” Zea helps support our teams, manage the day-to-day operations, and ensure both clinics continue to provide the highest standard of care for our patients and clients. ๐Ÿ’š

While much of her role involves managing the administrative side of the clinics, Zea is always happy to lend a helping hand wherever sheโ€™s needed. Whether itโ€™s supporting the nursing team, assisting with patients, or stepping in to help solve a problem, sheโ€™s always ready to jump in.

Zea has a fantastic eye for detail and is always looking for ways to support our teams and improve the experience for both our clients and their pets. Her calm, approachable nature and willingness to help make her an invaluable part of the Ovens & Kiewa Vets family. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿก Outside of the clinic, Zea enjoys exploring our beautiful region with her Staghound. At home, sheโ€™s surrounded by animals, including four cats and a flock of chickens, so itโ€™s safe to say her love for animals doesnโ€™t stop when she leaves work! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ”

When sheโ€™s not caring for the clinics or her own furry and feathered friends, youโ€™ll find Zea gardening, baking delicious treats, or getting creative with pottery. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿบ

Weโ€™re incredibly lucky to have Zea as part of our leadership team. Her dedication, organisation, and willingness to jump in wherever sheโ€™s needed help keep both of our clinics running smoothly every single day. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿฑ Check out this cutie! ๐Ÿ’›

We couldn't resist sharing this adorable little face!... It's always a highlight of our day meeting such gorgeous patients.

We hope this sweet kitty brightens your day as much as they brightened ours! ๐Ÿพโœจ

๐Ÿ’Š Pharmacy Friday ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿด

Is your horse squinting, tearing, or keeping one eye ...closed? Don't ignore it!

Eye problems in horses can go from minor to serious in a very short time. Because the eye is so delicate, every eye problem should be treated as an emergency until proven otherwise.

๐Ÿšฉ Signs to watch for:
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Squinting or holding an eye closed
๐Ÿ’ง Excessive tearing or discharge
๐Ÿ”ด Redness or swelling
โ˜๏ธ A cloudy or blue-looking eye
๐ŸŒž Sensitivity to light
๐Ÿค• Rubbing the eye or face
๐Ÿ‘€ Sudden vision changes

Common causes include:
โ€ข Corneal ulcers
โ€ข Grass seeds or other foreign bodies
โ€ข Eye infections
โ€ข Trauma
โ€ข Equine Recurrent Uveitis (Moon Blindness)

๐Ÿ’ก Pharmacy Friday Tip:
โŒ Never use old or leftover eye medications without veterinary advice. Some eye drops, especially those containing steroids, can make certain eye conditions much worse and may even threaten your horse's vision.

โœ… Keep your horse in a shaded area if they're uncomfortable in bright light and give us a call as soon as possible. Prompt treatment can make all the difference in protecting your horse's eyesight.

๐Ÿด When it comes to horse eyes, it's always better to be safe than sorry! If you notice anything unusual, contact our team for adviceโ€”we're here to help. ๐Ÿ’š
