💊 Pharmacy Friday: Ventilators – Helping Pets Breathe 🫁🐾

Sometimes our patients... need a little extra help breathing. That’s where a ventilator comes in.

A ventilator is a specialised machine that gently moves oxygen in and out of a patient’s lungs when they are unable to breathe effectively on their own. This support can be lifesaving while we treat the underlying condition.

When might a pet need a ventilator? Some examples:
• During some complex anaesthetic procedures
• Severe pneumonia or lung disease
• Snake envenomation causing paralysis of the breathing muscles
• Head trauma or neurological disease affecting breathing
• Critical illness where breathing becomes too weak or ineffective

While on a ventilator, patients are closely monitored by our veterinary team. We continuously check oxygen levels, breathing pressures, heart rate, blood pressure, and comfort to ensure they are receiving the safest and most effective support.

Ventilation is often used as a temporary bridge, giving the body time to recover while we treat the underlying problem.

Modern veterinary medicine allows us to provide advanced critical care when pets need it most. 🐶🐱

This handsome male desexed silver tabby, approximately 6- 8 ...months old, was brought in by the Shire Council and is now being lovingly cared for by our team.
He has a beautiful, gentle nature and has quickly won over our staff with his sweet personality. At this age he’s still playful and curious, but also enjoys affection and human company.

We ask that you please arrive 5–10 minutes early for your appointment. Allow extra time for traffic, roadworks, parking, weather, and settling your pet before your consultation.

Consultations are 20 minutes long, and arriving late may limit what we can cover. In some cases, we may need to reschedule to ensure your pet receives the care they need.

We appreciate clients who arrive on time and those who are patient when appointments run behind. Like in human healthcare, a patient’s condition can change quickly, and urgent cases may occasionally cause delays.
