Pinkeye is a disease that mainly targets the conjunctiva and cornea. It is the lay term for weepy, cloudy eyes in livestock. The condition is painful and debilitating.
Pinkeye generally occurs when the bacteria are present and the animal suffers some form of irritation or trauma to the cornea from dust, dryness, or ultraviolet light.

Pink Eye can be treated sucessfully with a topical antibiotic ointment and pretection from UV light using an eye patch. Occasionally injectable treatments may be required along with repetitive treatments. If left untreated Pink Eye causes extreame pain and production losses. 💉

Where rupture of the eye is a concern, covering the eye with an eye patch or having a vet temporarily surgically close the eyelid is recommended.

We can dispense medication for this issue with the approval of our vets if we have completed a farm visit in the last 12 months. 🩺

Throughout the summer it's a good time to remind pet ...parents about the dangers of heatstroke ☀️

During extreme hot weather events it's essential that we keep our pets cool and comfortable. Heatstroke can cause organ failure, brain damage and is potentially fatal.
Short nosed breeds of cats and dogs, elderly or ill pets, dogs which exercise excessively and overweight pets are particularly at risk.

To ensure the safety of your pets on sizzling summer days, please follow these tips:
🐕 Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening, and avoid hot footpaths and artificial grass.
🌬 If you are at home, keep your pets inside in the air-conditioning. If you do not have aircon, use fans to increase air circulation.
🌳 If you have to leave your pets outside, ensure that there is adequate shade for them to escape to.
💦 Provide plenty of fresh clean drinking water.
🚗 NEVER leave your pet in the car.
